| Abstract |
This study examines how urban form and gender differences influence food shopping trip patterns among the young-old population(aged 60?
69) in Sejong City, South Korea. Drawing on survey data and GPS-based activity logs from two contrasting urban settings ? a traditional
neighborhood(Jochiwon-eup) and a newly planned town(Goun-dong) ? the analysis reveals distinct gendered differences in travel behavior.
Women demonstrated significantly higher frequencies of food shopping trips than men, both on foot and by car. A more detailed analysis
highlights clear differences in destination types and transportation modes across the two areas: in Jochiwon-eup, traditional markets were
primarily accessed on foot, whereas in Goun-dong, residents frequently walked to nearby corporate-run Super Supermarkets (SSMs) and drove
to more distant superstores. These findings challenge conventional assumptions about gender and mobility in later life and underscore the
need for urban planning strategies that account for local spatial contexts and the diverse characteristics of food retail environments to better
support aging populations. |
