| Abstract |
Since 1971, the government-led Gyeongju Comprehensive Tourism Development Project has sought to transform Gyeongju into an
international tourist city, leading to the creation of the Bulguksa New Residential District in front of Bulguksa. This study examines the
formation and characteristics of the district through site, architectural, and landscape planning perspectives. The district shares features
common to other Gyeongju development projects of the 1970s, including grid-pattern streets and strict regulations enforcing Hanok-style
designs to create a historical landscape. At the same time, it is distinguished by its dual identity as both a resettlement area for displaced
residents and a tourist destination, which required particularly detailed regulations. In addition, the district served as an experimental site for
urban planning, incorporating innovative techniques such as block-based zoning and the undergrounding of power lines. |
