| Abstract |
This study investigates the formation process and historical characteristics of urban housing in Anyang City, focusing on detached public
housing supplied from the post-Korean War period through the 1970s. While most Korean housing history research has concentrated on
Seoul, this study highlights the overlooked dynamics of suburban mid-sized cities by examining public-led housing changes in Anyang,
including reconstruction housing, demonstration and self-help housing, government-built housing, and national housing. The findings are
threefold. First, Anyang's urban housing emerged at the intersection of state-led standardized designs and local specificities, with spatial
adaptations, such as dedicated rental spaces, reflecting the city's role as a growing industrial center accommodating migrant workers. Second,
floor plans display a transitional phase in which traditional spatial structures coexisted with Western functionalist living-room-centered layouts,
balancing contemporary needs with residents' lifestyles. Third, a multi-layered cooperation system involving the central government, local
authorities, housing cooperatives, and private contractors was established to overcome financial limitations and enable large-scale housing
supply. This study contributes to Korean housing historiography by complementing Seoul-focused research and clarifying the historical and
spatial significance of suburban cities in the modernization of Korean housing. |
