| Abstract |
Among the four roof-type terms in traditional Korean architecture, Ujingak displays distinctive lexical features. Rather than assuming its
origin, this study examines when and in what contexts the term first appeared as a dictionary headword and how it was subsequently
assimilated and reconfigured across scholarly communities after Korea’s liberation. By analyzing a corpus of architectural terminology
dictionaries compiled between the late 1940s and 2000, supplemented by expert writings, the study traces the earliest attestations of Ujingak
and reconstructs the pathways through which the term circulated and was reinterpreted. Attention focuses on two figures central to
codification: Ki-in Chang in architecture and Cheon Im in archaeological art history. Evidence suggests that Ujingak first emerged in the
archaeological art-history field and was later incorporated into architectural terminology through cross-referencing and standardization. This
case demonstrates how post-liberation terminology developed through disciplinary exchange and language planning. |
