| Abstract |
This study proposes an architectural design process applicable to the lunar environment through a comparative analysis of design processes in
general and specialized settings. To support this approach, conventional architectural design frameworks are examined alongside specialized
processes derived from Antarctic research station cases. Based on this comparison, Protection, Survival, and Maintenance are established as
key analytical criteria to evaluate how lunar architectural requirements are integrated across all design stages. The findings show that lunar
architectural design does not simply follow conventional stage-based processes. Instead, it restructures their internal logic in response to
extreme environmental conditions and long-term habitation demands. As a result, core design elements are not limited to specific stages but
operate continuously throughout the entire process. In particular, maintainability and operational continuity emerge as primary planning
constraints from the earliest stages of design. Accordingly, a lunar architectural design process is proposed with an integrated and non-linear
structure in which design, construction, operation, and maintenance are continuously connected and iteratively reviewed. While the
conventional stage-based framework is retained, the roles and decision-making criteria of each stage are reorganized to reflect survival-oriented
environmental conditions. Ultimately, this approach reconceptualizes lunar architecture as a long-term, process-based system and provides a
theoretical foundation for future lunar outpost design research. |
