| Abstract |
This study aims to reconstruct dancheong as a tactile learning medium and to explore the potential of an inclusive architectural heritage
education program based on tactile experience. The study was conducted in four stages: a review of prior studies on tactile cognition, tactile
learning, and heritage education; derivation of principles for tactile reconstruction based on the architectural functions of dancheong;
development and implementation of group-specific educational programs for visually impaired participants (11 sessions) and sighted participants
(4 sessions); and mixed-method evaluation through interviews and achievement assessments. The principles of tactile reconstruction were
organized around step-by-step learning, the structuring of patterns and color arrangements, and relational correspondences of color. The
findings show that tactile dancheong learning developed from an initially unfamiliar sensory experience into a process of reconstructing
understanding and shifting sensory perception. Visually impaired participants demonstrated progressive gains in learning achievement, with
experiential understanding, while sighted participants showed a shift from visual appreciation toward tactile interpretation and greater empathy
for others’ sensory experiences. The study suggests that tactile reconstruction can expand dancheong from a visually appreciated object into
an inclusive medium for interpreting and learning architectural heritage. |
