| Abstract |
This study analyzed the discrepancy between Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) in elderly welfare facilities
during summer and examined the effects of environmental and user-related factors on PMV?TSV differences. Field measurements were
conducted in six elderly welfare facilities in Changwon, Korea, and TSV responses were collected from 80 elderly occupants. PMV was
calculated using measured indoor environmental variables, clothing insulation, and metabolic rate estimated by the Mifflin equation, with
additional comparisons using WHO and Roza & Shizgal equations. The results showed a statistically significant difference between PMV and
TSV (p < .001), with a mean PMV?TSV difference of ?3.24, indicating that PMV systematically underestimated the actual thermal sensation
of elderly occupants. Multiple regression analysis identified mean radiant temperature (Tr) as the only significant environmental factor
affecting PMV?TSV difference (β = 0.405, p = .018), while gender analysis showed larger variation in female occupants. All three metabolic
rate equations produced consistently negative PMV?TSV differences, suggesting that metabolic correction alone could not resolve the
structural discrepancy. These findings indicate that PMV-based evaluation may have limitations when applied independently to elderly welfare
facilities and that thermal comfort assessment should incorporate elderly occupants’ actual thermal responses. |
