Title Structural Behavior of Non-Composite Basement Walls during Temporary Earth-Retaining System Dismantling

Abstract This study examines the current use of composite basement walls through field surveys of recent construction projects in Korea and analyzes the characteristics of earth pressure acting on basement walls during dismantling stages. Step-by-step structural analyses were conducted to account for changes in support conditions caused by strut removal, allowing a quantitative evaluation of the structural vulnerability of non-composite basement walls. In addition, the structural performance of composite basement walls was assessed by comparing allowable bending moment increases based on variations in the tensile reinforcement ratio. The results show that earth pressure during dismantling stages is generally lower than at-rest earth pressure. However, bending moments under temporary cantilever conditions significantly exceed the design bending moments for the final condition. In contrast, composite basement walls demonstrate improved structural performance, as the retaining wall continues to provide structural support during dismantling. These findings emphasize the need to consider the structural role of temporary earth-retaining systems throughout the dismantling process to ensure the safety of basement exterior walls during construction.
