| Abstract |
Media facades are increasingly used as urban building envelopes, yet existing evaluations have focused mainly on resolution and aesthetics,
with limited attention to how installation and material conditions affect information delivery and perceived visual burden. This study examines
the balance between information delivery and citizens’ perceived visual burden in urban media facades. Using six still-image stimuli (I01-I06)
representing different installation methods, facade types, and spatial contexts, a follow-up online survey of Korean adults yielded 150 valid
responses. Information-delivery performance (IDI), derived from prior C/L/A ratings, was integrated with perceived burden measures?fatigue,
glare, light-pollution/annoyance?and acceptability. Within the six-stimulus set, higher C/L/A levels generally accompanied higher fatigue and
glare, especially in attention-grabbing displays. Some configurations achieved high information delivery with lower visual burden, forming a
“high-efficiency, low-burden” group, whereas certain LED systems on opaque facades tended toward “high-efficiency, high-burden”
over-stimulation. By integrating IDI and FBI at the stimulus level, this study proposes a framework for balancing information performance
and citizen comfort. The findings support luminance/contrast control, facade/content guidelines, and urban lighting policies. The IDI-FBI
relationship should therefore be interpreted at the aggregated stimulus level rather than as evidence of individual-level causality. |
