| Abstract |
This study investigates the transformation of modern construction technologies and production systems in Jeju Island during the 1970s through
an analysis of doljip (traditional stone houses) featuring cement joints. The research aims to clarify the structural and aesthetic characteristics
of Jeju’s stone architecture by examining changes in masonry and joint techniques. A typological and field-based approach was applied,
combining literature review, aerial and street-view surveys, and on-site interviews with residents and craftsmen in eight villages of western
Jeju. The findings reveal that the production of doljip evolved from a traditional community-based cooperative system, where villagers directly
quarried and stacked local stones, into a specialized and segmented construction process involving external suppliers and professional
plasterers. Cement joints, which initially served as simple fillers, developed into decorative architectural elements, exhibiting geometric and
expressive patterns that enhanced the facades of both residential and non-residential buildings. This transition reflects the interplay between
technological modernization, economic growth driven by the tangerine industry, and the diffusion of construction knowledge during the late
1970s. The study highlights Jeju’s stone houses as a cultural medium that embodies the region’s architectural innovation, collective labor
tradition, and socio-economic modernization process. |
