| Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics and chronological trends of Dancheong expressions in reinforced concrete
Hanok-style public architecture built between the 1960s and the completion of the Main Building of Cheong Wa Dae in 1991. Emerging
during Korea’s efforts to reconstruct national identity while advancing modernization, this architectural typology prompted debates over
authenticity because of the substitution of traditional structural materials. In contrast, changes in Dancheong materials and techniques were
generally accepted with less resistance. In particular, the emergence and widespread use of Misaek Dancheong can be interpreted as a
political expression that reflects the state’s reconfiguration of tradition during this period. This acceptance highlights the different standards of
authenticity applied to structural systems and exterior ornamentation in traditional architecture. Dancheong functioned not only as decoration
but also as a visual medium expressing the intersection of contemporary aesthetics, cultural policy, and political planning. These findings
provide a basis for reinterpreting the concepts of tradition and authenticity in modern Korean architectural history through the visual language
of Dancheong. |
