| Abstract |
his study empirically investigates construction practitioners' perceptions of site safety environments, the adoption of smart safety technologies,
and the structural barriers that hinder their implementation. A mixed-methods approach combining Likert-scale items, nominal selection
questions, and open-ended responses was employed to support both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The findings reveal significant
differences in perceptions of site safety levels across organization types. At the same time, concerns about safety polarization were widely
shared regardless of career experience, project scale, or job role, suggesting that disparities in site safety represent a structural issue across
the construction industry. Perceptions of the effectiveness of smart safety technologies were moderately positive, while awareness of the gap
between site conditions and available technologies remained consistently high across all respondent groups, indicating that technology adoption
is a common industry-wide challenge. High implementation costs and a shortage of qualified personnel were identified as the primary barriers
to adoption, with most respondents supporting the inclusion of these costs in client-funded construction budgets. In addition,
document-oriented and formalistic safety management practices, along with excessive schedule compression, were frequently cited as major
causes of accidents. Trust in public safety inspections was also found to be relatively low, highlighting the need for a shift from punitive
regulation toward preventive safety management. These findings suggest that the effective diffusion of smart safety technologies requires an
integrated approach that addresses financial, human resource, and institutional factors, while prioritizing practical applicability in the field. |
