| Abstract |
This study examines how the former Buyeo National Museum, designed by Kim Swoo Geun, underwent major functional transformations over
five decades. Analyses of floor plans, spatial reconfigurations, and policy contexts was conducted across three distinct periods: the Museum
Period (1971-1993), the Research Institute Period (1993-2010), and the Complex Facility Period (2011-2024). The study identifies two
enabling factors: architectural conditions such as structural flexibility, spatial non-specificity, envelope continuity, and social processes such as
budget pragmatism, expert recognition of heritage value, community adoption. The findings suggest the building’s longevity stems not from
preserving its original form, but from its capacity to function as an open platform where architectural conditions and social processes interact,
offering a new lens for evaluating modern-contemporary architectural heritage. |
