Abstract |
Stupa was a kind of Buddhist architecture originated in India and was a place for enshirining Sarira of Buddha. In early Buddhist temple it was only a buliding for worship, si it has a absolute authority in Buddhism. After theappearance of Buddhist image and the shrine for it, however, the objectof worship moved into Buddhist image. So the existence of stupa graduallylost its value and its meaning changed. This phenomenon appeared in China,Korea and Japan as well as in India, and can be investigated spatially,or formally in part. In early Buddhist temple, stupa occupied central part and wide site of temple and its layout was astere, but as time passed, it gradually accupied unimportant part and narrow site, and located freely in the temple.This study aims to investigate the transition in meaning or value of Oriental Stupa architecture spatially and formally and analyze it systemaatically. |
