Abstract The purpose of this study is for finding out the major design factors and functional possibilities of multi-purpose space. This study was performed by looking over the Mies's 'Universal space' and the spatial feature of the Korean traditional dwellings in a sense of multi-function, mobility and flexibility. The outcome of the study are followings.1)In order to make the space multi-purposely, following conditions should be provided in the design process.a)The designer must understand the environment and behavior relationships:especially the concept of 'privacy' which provides a key link among the concepts of crowding, territorial behavior, and personal space in terms of cultural context. And various social units and its settings should be involved.b)providing the flexibility, mobility, simplicity, expansibility and the elimination of the solidity.2)If the architecture has been settled down through many generations, there should be great merits in it which couldn't be cut in a day. But since 20th century, Korean architecture has been shook basically through the sudden introduction of western civilization. For example, our daily activities such as eating, sleeping, studying, resting and talking happened at the same place of our residing space, which was the specific aspect of our multiple usage. However since the introduction of the western functionalism, the forte of Korean architecture has been despised under the treatment of non-differentiation of the function. This happening is just from the attempt to measure the different cultures in the same scale, dare I can say.So, the functinal feature of korean architecture should be re-illuminated in terms of culture context.
