Abstract The 'KAN' means a span or a grid which consists of columns. It was a planning module that ordered the structure, materials, and spaces of Korean architecture. Korean traditional architectures were planned on the basis of this 'KAN' organization, as a grid organization. The grid organization, a kind of spatial organization, is transfomed in a set of repetitive, modular units of space. This study aimed at finding the characteristics of the 'KAN' organization in the korean traditional vernacular houses. These characteristics were presented throughout the concept, meanings, and functions of the 'KAN' organization.
