Abstract This Study is concerned with the analysis and description of the built environment as a semiotic system as a system of meaningful signs.Every human society communicates architectonically. The component unite of an architectionic code or system consist of contrastively - opposed formations in media adressed to visual perception. In the broadest sense, communication consists of the transmission of information regarding the perception of similarities and differences. The system of the built environment, like any semiotic code, is a complexly-ordered device for the cueing of such perceptions. As a system of signs, a built environment does not exist in a vacuum but is co-occurrent with ensembles of other sign systems in different media.
