Title |
A Study on the Semiotic Analysis of a Streetscape |
Abstract |
The aesthetic order of a street as a medium-space between architecture and city defies a systematic analysis. A streetscape is formed not only by physical factors but also by architectural environment and interacting human behaviors. Thus, such factors of a streetscape could be regarded as signs to communinicate the cultural phenomena.-The study aims to test a technique derived from syntactic and semantic analysis by applying in to three streetscapes chosen in Seoul city. The study concludes: 1)the sign-space of a street is expressed by a system of signs such as a system of words; 2)although the number of architectural elements in the architectural sign is finite, the architectural language can be infinitely produced by manipulating the basic elements. It seems obvious that the semiological application-study of the whole rather than its components-shows the potential of illuminating the ever-elusive characteristics of a streetscape. |
