Title Inhibiting Alkali-Silica Reaction with Pozzolanic Material and Its Mechanism

Abstract The preventive effect of pozzolanic materials on alkali-silica reaction and its mechanism were considered. Mortar bar using 20 pozzolanic materials and 2 reactive aggregates were tested. Characteristics of pozzolanic materials such as chemical composition, fineness, alkali content and Ca(OH)2 content of cement paste were investigated. Microstructural studies of the mortar bar also have been carried out.From the test results, it is obvious that preventive effects of the admixtures are related to their pozzolanic activities, i.e., Ca(OH)2 content of the cement paste. It is suggested that high active silica content and high fineness of the admixture is favourable to the preventive effect.
