A Study on the Symbolism in Korean Traditional Architecture |
Abstract |
The limited interpreation of Korean traditional architecture is ascribed to its study in mode and aethetics. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is devided into two aspcts. One aims to enlarge the range of the interpretation of Korean traditianal architecture by combining architectural semiotics with the existing interpreation of it, the other to approach to its nature by grasping the conception of idea that is connoted in the design elements. In this view the symbolic meanings indicated in Palaces, Buddhist temples, Sowons and Hyang Kyos(a kind of Confucian school) that are the objects of this study are referred. This study shows that many design elements in Korean traditional architecture were speculative products involving Yin Yang philosophy and Five elements philosophy, Feng Shui theory, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, a principle of Shamanism etc. |
