Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present the practical recommendations for improving the bond strength of concrete brick and mortar which considerably affects the flexual strength of brick masonry walls. The experimental factors concerned the physical properties of concrete bricks such as the suction of bricks, the wetting of bricks, and the water loss from mortar to brick, which are supposed to affect the bond strength, are studied and discussed through the results of the experiments. It is the initial rate of absorption, and not the absorption or the comperssive strength of units that affects greately to the bond strength. The appropriate value of the initial rate of absorption is 15g/min. The absorbent bricks are expected to increase the bond strength from 146% to 214% by wetting bricks. The mortar included hydrated lime have the properties of repressing the water loss from mortar to lower and upper bricks compared to the mortar without hydrated lime.
