Abstract The purpose of this paper is to research the performance of the thermal environment in summer in a case of the earth-bermed house designed to be suitable for Korean situation in comparison with a conventional housing. The result of this study can be summerized as follows;1) The indoor mean temperature of the earth bermed house is 1.3 C lower than outdoor one within a period of measurement and that of a conventional housing is 0.4 C higher than outdoor one, so the earth bermed housing has cooler indoor temperature in summer.2) The time-lag of the earth bermed house is 40minutes longer than that of a conventional housing and the earth bermed housinghas better performance of retaining heat than the conventional housing.3) The fluctuating ratio of indoor temperature in the earth bermed house is 0.46 smaller than the conventional housing. It means that the earth bermed housing has better idiosyncrasy of thermostatic mitigation than the conventional housing.4) The relative humidity of an earth bermed house has 12.5 percentages more than a conventional housing.5) The thermal environment of the earth bermed house except for the humidity in summer is proved to more comfortable than that of a conventional housing according to the internal treatise. To improve the thermal environment of earth bermed housing, the prevention of moisture should be investigated in the future.
