Abstract A history of modern school building in Korea dates back to 1880's. After the Cho-Seon dynasty opened ports to foreign countries, western system of education was gradually substituted for the traditional system.Three types of school foundations have been found in Korea since then. Those are public schools by the government, mission schools and private schools by the individuals. And three kinds of schools have their typical styles or types accordingly. The purpose of this research is to find out each of their architectural styles and structures by the way of analyzing examples. The history of developments in modern school buildings can be divided into three periods in accordance with the educational policy, building types and the way of construction. The first period(1880-1907) was the beginning of the modern school and charcterized by its confusion. The typical style of school building had not been settled. In some cases, traditional houses were renovated to accomodate school functions. In the second period(1908-1925), public schools began to take imperial style and most of the mission schools constructed in colonial style. And the new system of education was established and the university began its first step.During the third period(1926-1945) new method of construction using reinforced concrete and mortar finish with flat roof was introduced and the design of the buildings became much simpler. The trend of this third period succeeded up until now and we could find many examples around us.
