Abstract The nonlinear behavior of concrete in compression was studied based on the theory of fracture mechanics and suggested a few models for size effect.Existing experimental data in references for compressive strength of concrete specimens in various type, numbered more than 700, were used to evaluate the models of the size effect on the compressive strength of concrete. The expremental data, with a few exceptions of reversing phenomenon for samll specimens less than 6" in diameter. reveal that the smaller of cylinders and cubes indicates the higher strength, i.e., size effect. Finally this paper presents several models for the size effect on the compressive strength of concrete by the regression analysis with existing experimental data for the cylinder and the cube specimens with different specimen sizes and various maximum aggregates.
