A Field experiment on the change of children`s Spatial Behavior according to Interior Design of Institutional Residence |
Abstract |
This study is a field experiment on the relationship between interior design and spatial behavior. An unobtrusive method was used to observe the spatial behavior in the real setting. Two rooms of an institutional residence were employed as laboratories, and subjects were 16 elementary school girls living in the institute. Changed interiors were designed manipulating line, form and mainly colors to be pleasant interiors. In terms of color, two rooms were differently treated:one is warm color and the other is cool color. Spatial behavior, adependent variable, was measured by frequency, distance and amount of area of movements. The pleasantly designed environment resultedin the increased distance of movements. This results were different according to color used. Color had an effect on the perception of the envieronment. In the stage of this perception, both seasonal and expectational factors had great effects on the evaluation of the environment. In the light of environmental psycholgy, the major concern of this study was the direct effect of color on spatial behavior. It, however, showedthe perception of pleasantness effected more directly. It is also found that distance was a more adequate indicator of spatial behavior than frequency or amount of area. Additionally a theoretical model of environment-behavior relationship was confirmed and dynamic cycle was added to it. Recommendation and stggestion for further study were provided. |
