Abstract The objective of this study is (1)to find the production-related work space and house keepping-related work space in the traditional farmhouses and the modernized farmhouses expanding the analysis scope to the yard and several annexes of the two types of farmhouse production-related work space and housekeeping-related work space of each of them. Following are the results. (1)The traditional farmhouses and the modernized farmhouses both have higher building coverage because of newly constructed annexes, majorly influnced by expanded livestock breeding and larger farming machines. (2)The two types of farmhouses both have larger work space by attaching awnings to the eaves of the roof of the main house in the direction of the front, the rear and the flank, and this modification is distinguishable in the modernized farmhouses because of reduced kitchen space. (3)The modernized farmhouses have kitchens in the rear of the house, causing cut-off between the kitchen and the front yard and weakening the auxiliary function fo the MARU as work space. This suggests the necessity to review the floor plan of the modernized farmhouse in the forward researches.
