Abstract The increase of high-rise buildings in our country draws deep attention for the application of wind effect on tall structures. In this study we tried to calculate the basic wind speed in different rigions in Korea through the method of asympotic distributions of the extremes. The results are as following1. The application of TYPE 1 of the Gumbel distribution is proved to be most adequate for the tendency of the annual maximum wind speed in Korea.2. Through various methods applied to determine the parameter for the Gumbel distribution equation, it is proved that the Hazen method has less error range than that of Gumbel. The method of moment which simplifies the calculation by the standard mean and deviation of the sample, gives the same result as Hazen method.3. The estimated wind speed of 100year's return period culculated by the Hazen method reveals the possibility of reduceing than currently adopted design wind speed.
