Abstract Thermal mass of the wall requires to analyse its thermal performance with the unsteady-state heat transfer calculation methods. In this study, four kinds of unsteady-state heat transfer calculation methods were studied.Among them the Transfer Function Method and the Finite Difference Method were computerized in Quick-BASIC Under the assumption of constant interior temperature, the thermal performance of walls were analysed 1) by varying the thickness of the thermal mass,2) by barying the location of the insulation layer,3) by varying the climate type.In conclusion, the difference between steady-state and unsteady-state heat transfer analyses, advantages and disadvantages of unsteady-state heat transfer calculation methods, and the possible application area were discussed.
