Abstract Majority of the Buddhist temple in Korea were located in mountains and we can find certain characteristics of these sites. It is assumed that Korean view of nature and the natural conditions of terrain as well as the Buddhist view of nature influenced the selection of the site.The aim of this paper is to study the deciding factor in the location of Hae-in temple which was established in 802 A.D. through the study of the physical and cultural conditions. For this purpose, the location of Hae-in temple with historical and geographical aspects is examined. The relation of built environment to nature is analysed into three parts;the physical conditions of site, the landscape character and geomantic method called feng-shui.
