Abstract The importance of communication system has been increased according to the rapid development toward an industrialized society. The speech communication in an interior space has a major role in modern communication systems. And there is an urgent need for assessing the speech communication quality of a room which is mainly subject to the architectural and acoustial quality of the space. Articulation test was originally a quantitative method for measuring the telephone communication quality, and adopted in many other fields comprising architectural acoustics. For using spoken materials, the language has the most determinant effect on the test, In these regards, it is intended to propose an articulation testing standard which is suitable for Korean language, with the factor of test material, talkers, listeners, and test procedure, with which we can rank the speech communication quality of an auditorium. In this part of the study, we made a pilot test with a preliminary articulation testing stnadard to provide some useful informations in develping the standard. The test indicated several problems which have to be modified for a better performance of the standard.
