Abstract The energy calculation slide rule was developed as a simple tool for estimating the heating energy requirement of Korean residences. The following 6 types of energy conservation measures;wall insulation, ceiling insulation floor insulation, window size and number of panes, infiltration air change volume and building azimuth, were especially considered in designing this slide rule. The principle of load calculation is to cumulate heating load due to each conservation option. To quantify the heating loads for all of the above mentiond conservation measures, the data which were generated by computer simulation were analyzed using multiple linear regression and established the relationship between component loads and individual conservation measures. Finally, 6 kinds of slide rules, for 2 types of prototype houses in 3 base locations, were designed and manufactured. The deviation of all slide rules for typical houses were within 2% comparing with the outputs of DOE-2.1A program.
