Abstract This paper bring lights on the trends toward and actual space use of two-storied houses in the rural area. The results of investigation are as following;1) The process of modernization of the rural housing carries with it the corresponding change in the people's life style and structure of the traditional community.2) The process may be summarized to 3 categories:interior space, and functional aspects.3) The two-storied rural houses may be classifed into three types in space use:formal, semi-formal, and practical one. In relation to the place of staircases those houses are, again, categorized into 4:internal, external, both, and nonexistent cases.4) Although the space of first floor alone do provide enough place to live for the household size (4.13 persons of per family) in most cases, trends toward two-storied houses were seen.5) As a result, the second floor has been used mainly for storage (not for living) in most cases.
