Abstract Yearly wind data is usually used in determing design wind speed and it is generally assumed to be TYPE I distributed. But the number of yearly wind data is less than 20 or so, design wind speed by yearly wind data is not reliable. On this study we use monthly wind data as well as yearly wind data and compare each other. Monthly wind data and yearly wind data are assumed to be TYPE I distributed, and their parameters are calculated by method of moments and method of maximum likelihood. The results are 1) Monthly wind data for 3 years shows a good estimation of design wind speed,2) About 70%, the design wind speed by monthly wind data is less than that by yearly wind data, 3) Errors in design wind speed between monthly wind data and yearly wind data is less than 20% in 70% stations in Korea,4) The confidence level by monthly wind data is calculated and it cna be used in the structural reliability field.
