A Study on the Characteristics of Place-formation in Urban Residential Area |
Abstract |
This study tries to clarify values and environmental characters of places in urban residential area. The central message of this study is that a sense of personal satisfaction as well as sense of community are both inescapably grounded in places, especially those in one's residential area. This study identifies environmental characters of places in urban residential area. They are: 1) continuity and regularity of behavior, 2) identity of physical environment, 3) diversity of use of physical environment, and 4) comfortableness of environment. This study also identifies three types of places in urban residential area which work as loci of social interactions. This study finally implys that the people-place relationship in residential area serves as an important heuristic device for several issues facing neighborhood design. |
