Abstract The primary objective of this experimental study is to offer the basic data for an effective reinforcing method to improve the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete beams under inelastic load reversals. To achieve this purpose, total 6 beams were tested in parameters of cross diagonal reinforcements over a specific beam length (1D D:Beam Depth), concrete compressive strength(f'c) and span-to-depth ratio (L/D).In specimen B4X-2(with cross diagonal reinforcements), there was no pinching in hysteresis loops in spite of high shear stress (6 f'c~7 f'c psi) on the beam section and the energy dissipation capacity was enhanced over 100% compared with that of specimen without cross diagonal reinforcements. As a result, the use of cross diagonal reinforcements over a plastic hinging zone is one of the most effective method to improve the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete beam subjected to high shear stress.
