Abstract This paper is to study the effects of variables which influence the behavior of reinforced concrete columns under uniaxial compression. The main variables in this study are the yield strength of longitudinal steel, the ratio of the area of longitudinal steel to the area of cross section, the distribution of longitudinal steel, and existence or nonexistence of concrete cover. To investigate the effevts of these variables, nine reinforced concrete and two plain concrete specimens were tested.In the theoretical analysis, the calculation of the additional strength in concrete due to steel reinforcement was proposed and the ultimate strength was determined. And these theoretical results were compared with experimental results.
