Abstract In this study, an efficient earthquake resistant design method for building structures is proposed based on analyses of earthquake resisting properties of structures with various types of arrangement of earthquake resisting elements such as shear walls or braces. The effects of shear walls or braces on seismic response of structures are to reduce lateral displacements and resist against story shear forces. The effects of soft stories or eccentric arrangement of shear walls turned out to be significant in increase of local stresses resulting in possible damage to structures designed without proper considerations of such irregularities. Seismic resistance of various types of bracing systems was examined through analytical and experimental methods in linear and nonlinear ranges.Since one of the most efficient structural type for building structures seems to be dual systems with shear walls or braces considering Korean seismicity and the size and shape of buildings, earthquake resistant design considerations proposed in this study will be widely applicable to efficient seismic design of building structures in Korea.
