The Basic Study on the Site Lay-out of Koryo Buddhist Architecture |
Abstract |
This paper is the starting point for revealing the architectural characteristics of buddhist temples in Koryo dynasty. Architectural intents were interpreted on many documentary records and historical materials. Forms of site lay-out were typfied based on archaeological achievements and field survey. Temples were composed of various buildings. There were many buildings for worship or monks, public facilities like hotels, and pavillions for the noble believers. In a temple, some sub-clusters were organized centering around main cluster. The multiness of cluster from was the important character. Composition forms of main cluster were various. These forms were mainly typfied by the systems of pagodas, i.e., single, twin, none-pagoda, and juxtaposition the main hall with pagoda. |
