The Development of the Pattern of Single Pagoda-Image Hall |
Abstract |
The site pattern of single pagoda and image hall enclosed in a cloistered gallery evolved out of the preceding pattern of three image halls from around the beginning of the sixth century. Among the numerous temple sites of this pattern, the site layout of only five Paekje temples located in the vicinity of Puyo are identified through excavation. Although these five sites employ the same site pattern, no single site is exactly the same as the other. Through the examination of these datailed differences, this paper attempts to identify the process and motivation of the changes within the period of single pagoda and image hall pattern. Three aspects of change, particularly, are investigated as means to clarify the development stages of the changes. They are, 1)the location of bell tower and sutra repository in relation to the cloistered gallery, 2)the ratio between the two sides of the rectangular gallery, 3)the size and material of pagoda. The result of the investigation of these three aspects could unveil the pattern of development among the five sites as much as to be able to place the five sites in chronological order. |
