The Development of the Pattern of Three Image Halls |
Abstract |
This paper aims to identify the process of change of the three image hall pattern during the period of the Three Kingdoms. The Paekje site of Kunsu-ri at Puyo needs to be viewed as an early development of three image hall pattern, and the Silla site of Hwangryong-sa at Kyungju, as a revised pattern of the Koguryo sites of three image halls as well as the beginning stage of single image hall pattern. As one of the result of the study, the process of the birth of single image hall could be identified. The Paekje site of Miruk-sa, too, could be understood as a successful development derived from the pattern of Hwangryong-sa. From around the mid-sixth to the mid-seventh century, both one and three image hall patterns existed together with mutual influence. The beginning of this process was marked by the site of Hyangryong-sa, while the site of Miruk-sa could be said to be located at th point where the process ended. |
