Abstract This study developes an overview of meaning of dwelling to build a bridge between research works on this topic and design of residential environment. The focus of this work is on the phenomenological view of dwelling. This essay explains meanings of dwelling under the following four subtitles: dwelling as small private world: dwelling as center of the world; dwelling as symbol of self; dwelling as social unit. It is contended that dwelling environment should be understood not as merely abstract and homogeneous space but as meaningful place. This essay also discusses about the phenomenon of homelessness in modern cities, and accordingly suggests methods and guidlines of environmental design.
