Abstract This study considers the formal meanings and compositional characterisctics of the concept of `center' in Louis Kahn's architecture. It examines that the inclusion of centrality in his architectural form, as the real image of the `spaces within spaces' in the hierarchy of independent parts, was determined by the three concepts of spatial layers, ruins and hollow column, which are related with structure, light and the nature of the inseparable parts of the problem. It also discusses his architectural form was essentially inquired with the centrality having centers within it, not as the mere geometric configuration pattern.
