Abstract |
What distinguishes architecture from painting or sculpture is its spatial quality. Therefore the history of architecture is fundamentally based on the history of man shaping space. Nevertheless we have mainly depended on formalistic description that classify architectural forms and compare styles of each periodes.The internal and external spatial qualities of Gothic architecture is researshed in this study. The plan of Gothic cathedral was based on the organization of mature Romanesque architecture but Gothic cathedral itself represented a manifestation of the ordered christian cosmos. That is the unique quality which the Gothic architecture have in comparison with other styles. |
