A Study on the builder`s tools in the building constructions of the second half of the Chosun Dynasty |
| Abstract |
More than 98 names of tools are found in the written documents for the official building construction of the Chosun Dynasty.Among them, tools for wood occupies 78 kinds and sort of plane are the largest in number. So, it can be said that tools for wood, especially the sorts of plane, had been developed most extensively in this period. It is also found that the most kinds of tools appeared in the 17th century, and newer tools seldom appeared thereafter. It means tools had already reached their highest level of maturity in the 17th century. Large and simple tools had been used in making columns, beams and rafters, while the variety of small and delicate tools had been used in making brackets and window parts. In the case of bracket part, more than 20 sorts of carving tools had been used by carpenters, carvers and joiners.The use of those various carving tools in this period became the dominant background toward the tendency of embelishment in the architecture of the second half of the Chosun Dynasty. |
