Abstract Urban design supposed to bridge the gap between architecture and urban planning has been developing as an unique area of sesearch inquiry and professional disciplines.The first part of this research paper focuses on the knowledge base of urban design functions in making our cities more responsive to our environmental design needs.The concept of responsive environment and public realm is emphasized in viewing urban design act as making-sense process and performing arts.The second part analyzes the current state of urban design research and academic models. In the concluding part the author formulates an urban design systems model for comprehensive inquiry of urban design acts and their support bases for better awareness and design of desired responsive environment.
