Abstract In general, the shear failure of the concrete slab in composite floor system tends to occur longitudinally in the main. This fact has shown a serious problem from the viewpoint of stability of the structures. The objective of this investigation is to study the effects of the transverse reinforcements and the length of shear plane upon the shear-transfer resistance of the slab, and to examine its failure mechanisms. From the test results and theoretical study results, it is found that the longitudinal shear capacity of the slab is increased, with increase of the amounts of the transverse reinforcements and the length of effective shear plane in the slab.
