Abstract Sewon is a kind of Confucian educational facilities(private institution of learning) after middle of Cho Son dynasty. Sawon is the place where people worshiped their ancestral tablet and it was performed in the period of the Three States.Especially, a great number of Sawoo was built in Cho Son dynasty. Most of these two kinds of remains were withdrawn in 1871 and 47 places are left throughout the nation. Thereafter, these two kinds of remains were restored to the former state and now, about 130 places(expect for Sawoo which was built after 1871) exist in Chon Nam Area even except for other area. In this paper, 60 of 130 places were precisely investigated, analyzed, and arranged architecturally. The method of research was run paralled with study of literature and field survey. The detailed contents of this paper is background of erection and present condition of architecture, architectural characteristics in the view of place, composition of building, the present condition of disposion of Seowon and Sawoo in Chon Nam Area. And the building styles of Sadang(shrine), Kangdang(a lacture hall), which are pointed out as major building at Seowon, Sawoo was analyzed synthetically. Through this study architectural characteristics of Seowon, and Sawoo in Chon Nam Area will be examined closedly. In addition, this study is regarded as opportunity of furnishing data which can be compared with Seowon, Sawoo of other area.
