Abstract Of some possible ways to respond to the housing shortage problem in Korea, most urgently needed is the technology innovation in housing construction. A consensus among related groups is that the industrialized building technology is a powerful alternative to facilitate a speedy provision of a desired number of high-quality at a relatively low cost. Given many barriers to thwart this innovation, however, this technology has been little studied and developed, nor accepted in regular construction practice. The present study thus was oriented to create a comprehensive and systematic view regarding these obstacles. Using surveys of housing practitioners and user-servey quasi-experimentation, five groups of barriers were found-economic, institutional, techolohical, organizational, and consumer-related, with each group again comprising several factors. Each of these technologically curbing factors was described, and ways to eliminate or reduce the influence of these factors were introduced.
