| Abstract |
Because of its geographical location of island in the sea, the Cheju Island has had cultural connections between some areas in northern continent, Korean Peninsular and in southern islands since the prehistoric age.The vernacular houses in Cheju Island were shaped a unique house type under the influence of southern and northern culture.This paper has endeavored to reaearch the formation of the folk houses,and the characteristic focused on the southern cultural element in vernacular houses. The vernacular houses in Cheju Island formed a southern character houses originally. The inside structure of kitchen and wooden floor(sangbang) would be the elements of the southern culture, which were transmitted through sea route, But they were influenced gradually to the culture of the Korean Penisular from the north. |
