Abstract As an academic concentration or profession, urban design scarcely existed in the early 1960s. Beginning at this time, the majority seem to have established it as a discipline distinct from planning, which in its increasingly abstract treatment of land use and density had abandoned concern for physical form.Urban design, therefore, was proposed a time-honoured and synthetic art through some shifting processes, a necessary conjunctive to analytic, socio-cultural,regulatory,and administrative process of planning. Its acceptance represented a criticism of modern architecture and planning, which had condoned the suburbanization that had imploded time and exploded space. This study is aimed to look into the birth of urban design in the view of socio-cultural context under these conditions by searching for thed trace and by looking for the future directions of urban design itself.
